Day 23 in hospital...this whole thing sucks!

Yeah, none of this is fun to be sure. Ed is really struggling at this point with being confined in the hospital for over 3 weeks. It's so hard to stay positive when you're away from your home, cozy bed and family. It's so hard to leave Ed at the end of every day, but I remind him that tomorrow will be better and one day soon he will be coming home to us!

We have lots to be grateful for at this point. Ed is doing better and getting stronger every day. His hands and feet are healing from the chemo burns and his fevers are reducing in frequency; so much so that today he never got above 99.6! He is working on regaining his strength by walking every day; and he's begun this week to regularly work with a Physical Therapist. He's also working on maintaining his nutrition; a very difficult task at this point, but he's doing pretty good considering!

So what now? Well, we wait and wait....for Ed to stop having fevers, for him to regain his strength and for his blood counts to return. The docs say counts return, on average, around day 28. Some of the docs think his counts may return sooner since he didn't have any Leukemia in his bloodstream when he was admitted; others think they may take longer to return since he's had a transplant previously. I think they'll return when Ed's body says they should! In any event, we're definitely in striking distance at this point. So we continue to wait and to focus on the positive and to know that this will work! Tomorrow WILL be better!

Ed could really use all the positive energy and prayers you all can muster at this point; he needs your support to find the strength to keep going each day and to know that he will come home to us soon. Please feel free to leave messages of support and encouragement here on the blog and I will be sure he sees them!

With love and highest hopes! - Ed, Kelly, Regan and Ryan

  2. Hi Ed

So glad to hear you are doing better than the last post! You have a huge amount of friends and family rooting and praying for your speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing you at church soon walking Ryan around. Keep focusing on getting yourself better and believing in the Thorp Family Mantra that Tomorrow will be a Better Day! Instead of taking up rock climbing after this battle, maybe sky diving???

    God Bless,

  3. Ed,

Uncle Mike here. It is rather hard to put feelings into words especially in a public forum such as this but here goes.

Bro, among the many things that we know about you is that you are a strong son'o'beech. You will step up and take the hits and finish the riff no matter what.

So, Ed, can I make a series of requests? Take 1 more step today than you did yesterday. Walk just a "tad" faster than you did yesterday. Drink that extra 1 ounce of water or juice. Smile once today when you don't want to and then double that tomorrow. No one can take this "cup" from you Ed, but please allow us to push, cajole and maybe even cheer a bit.

Ed, to take a bit from AION, I am all out of res stones but please accept these health and mana potions. They do work....just use um and keep the beat steady.

I have never met you, but I think about you every day. I will continue thinking positive thoughts until you are back with your family, and then I will do it some more.
